There’s more to Colorado than pot shops, skiing, and breweries. The state is FULL of stunning, high alpine lakes. The sort of spots that make any hike (no matter how grueling) well worth the effort.

If you’re up for the challenge (and the reward), journey out of the city and head to the mountains. From mellow trails that feel more like a walk in the park to routes that lead you up 14,000-foot mountains (also known as 14ers), there’s one thing every hike on this list has in common: It features an alpine lake oasis.
Just make sure that you check trail conditions before you go (depending on the time of year, routes may still be snow-covered and icy) and follow the seven principles of Leave No Trace, so you can leave trails better than you found them.
